Choosing Your Family’s Hawaiian Home: Resorts vs. Rentals
First things first, let’s find your perfect home away from home. This is a big decision, as it sets the tone for your whole trip. In Kona, you generally have two fantastic options: a full-service resort where convenience is king, or a vacation rental that offers the freedom and flexibility of your own space.
Full-Service Resorts are designed to make your life as a parent easier. They are masters of creating a seamless vacation experience, with pools, restaurants, and activities all in one place.
- Four Seasons Hualalai: For the ultimate luxury family getaway, this resort is in a class of its own. It features the fantastic “Kids For All Seasons” program, a complimentary club for children ages 5 to 12 that immerses them in the spirit of Hawaii. The resort boasts eight pools, including a dedicated sandy-bottom Keiki (children’s) pool and the incredible King’s Pond—a 1.8-million-gallon swimmable aquarium carved from lava rock and filled with over 1,000 tropical fish. Families can also enjoy cultural activities like lei making at the Ka’upulehu Cultural Center.
- Outrigger Kona Resort: Perched on dramatic lava cliffs overlooking Keauhou Bay, this resort is a playground for families. Its centerpiece is a multi-level fantasy pool complete with a 200-foot waterslide. The resort offers a wealth of daily cultural activities, from hula and ukulele lessons to historic tours. A truly unique feature is the on-site manta ray viewing deck, where you can watch the gentle giants feed at night. With a sandy-bottomed kids’ pool and a teen lounge, there’s something to keep children of all ages entertained.
- Hilton Waikoloa Village: This place is practically a theme park for families. It’s huge, with multiple pools connected by waterslides, a massive saltwater lagoon where you can snorkel with fish and sea turtles (honu), and even a Dolphin Quest program on-site. You can get around on a tram or a canal boat, which the kids will absolutely love.
Vacation Rentals are my go-to for more space, privacy, and the ability to cook our own meals. Having a kitchen can be a game-changer for the budget and for picky eaters. Sites like Vrbo and Airbnb, along with local agencies like Kona Coast Vacations, have tons of options. The magic of separate bedrooms can’t be overstated—naps and early bedtimes for the kids don’t mean the end of the evening for you!
| Property/Service Name | Type | Key Family Amenities | Price Point | Best Suited For |
| Four Seasons Resort Hualalai | Resort | Kids For All Seasons club (ages 5-12), 8 pools including Keiki Pool and swimmable aquarium, cultural center, marine life experiences | $$$$$ | Luxury-focused families seeking premium service, extensive kids’ programming, and unique marine experiences. |
| Hilton Waikoloa Village | Resort | Multiple pools with waterslides, large saltwater lagoon, Dolphin Quest, resort tram and canal boats | $$$$ | Families with active kids and teens seeking a high-energy, all-inclusive entertainment experience. |
| Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa | Resort | Multi-level pool with 200-ft waterslide, manta ray viewing deck, cultural activities, kids’ play area, teen lounge | $$$ | Families looking for a resort with great water features, on-site cultural activities, and unique wildlife viewing. |
| Kona Coast Vacations | Rental Agency | Multi-bedroom condos/homes, full kitchens, private or shared pools, laundry facilities | $$-$$$$ | Larger families, those on a budget, or families who prioritize space, privacy, and self-catering flexibility. |
Day 1: Arrival & Gentle Immersion
Today is all about easing into “island time.” After you land at Kona International Airport (KOA), grab your rental car and head to your accommodation. The only thing on the agenda is to settle in. Unpack, take a dip in the pool, and just breathe. Acknowledging travel fatigue is the secret to starting your vacation on the right foot. For a gentle introduction to Kona, take a leisurely stroll along Aliʻi Drive. For dinner, keep it simple and fun at
Huggos on the Rocks. It’s a “toes-in-the-sand” kind of place where the kids can play right by the table while you watch the sunset with a well-deserved mai tai.
Day 2: An Ocean Adventure to Captain Cook’s Bay
Let’s get the family out on the water for an unforgettable ocean adventure! Today we’re heading to Kealakekua Bay, home of the historic Captain Cook monument and arguably the most famous snorkeling spot on the Big Island. The easiest and most fun way to get there with kids is on a morning snorkel cruise that sails right from Kona. It’s a fantastic way to see the coastline and you might even spot some playful dolphins along the way!
We booked this morning snorkel tour at Captain Cook & Kealakekua Bay and it included everything we need for a stress-free day: a delicious breakfast and lunch, all our snorkel gear, and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen. They often have amazing features like a waterslide off the side of the boat and a jumping platform that the kids (and brave parents!) will love. For little ones who aren’t quite ready for a mask, some boats even offer body boards with built-in viewing windows so they don’t miss out on the vibrant fish and coral below. It’s a perfect, all-in-one activity that will fill your morning with sunshine and amazing underwater sights.
After your 4-5 hour adventure, you’ll head back to the harbor with happy, tired-out kids. For dinner, a relaxed evening at Kona Brewing Co is the perfect way to end the day. It has a fantastic outdoor area with a play space for the kids, so you can relax with a pizza and a fresh local beer while recounting your snorkeling adventure.
Day 3: Journey into Hawaiian History
Today, we’ll connect with the island’s deep history with a visit to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, about a 30-minute drive south of town. This sacred site was a “Place of Refuge” where ancient Hawaiians who broke a sacred law (kapu) could find forgiveness. For kids, it’s like exploring an ancient village with a giant wall, thatched huts, and amazing carved wooden images (kiʻi). Grab a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor center to turn the visit into a fun scavenger hunt for a badge!
For a sunset dinner, I recommend Papa Kona Restaurant & Bar. It has stunning views and is right next to some tide pools where the kids can hunt for little sea creatures while you wait for your food.
Day 4: The Taste of Kona
Let’s explore Kona’s world-famous coffee! A trip up the mountain to a coffee farm is a must. Greenwell Farms, a farm with history dating back to 1850, offers fantastic free walking tours. They’re short, engaging, and walk you through the whole process from coffee cherry to roasted bean. The adults will love the free coffee tasting, and the kids will enjoy being on a real working farm.
In the afternoon, explore Kailua-Kona town. Walk out on the Kailua Pier and browse the shops along Aliʻi Drive. Don’t miss the Kona Farmers Market for tropical fruits and handmade souvenirs. For lunch, Island Lava Java is a perfect oceanfront spot. They are known for being incredibly family-friendly and have even been known to make off-menu items like a simple grilled cheese for picky eaters.
Day 5: A Day of Sun, Sand, and Shave Ice
Every family vacation needs a dedicated do-nothing-but-relax day. Today is that day! Pack up your beach bag and head to one of Kona’s beautiful beaches. Magic Sands Beach Park is close to town and great for boogie boarding on calm days. If you want more space, drive north to Hapuna Beach often called one of the world’s best beaches. It has lifeguards and full facilities, making it an easy choice for a full day of sandcastle building. And no Hawaii day is complete without shave ice!
Scandinavian Shave Ice is a local legend, but Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is also amazing. For a low-key dinner, grab some incredible poke bowls for the adults from Da Poke Shack and enjoy a quiet meal back at your condo or hotel room.
Day 6: The Magical Manta Ray Encounter
Let’s have a relaxed day building up to a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience tonight. A fun, low-key morning activity is a tour at the Ocean Rider Sea Horse Farm. It’s educational, and the kids get to gently hold a live seahorse—an experience they will never forget!
Tonight is the main event: the Manta Ray Night Snorkel. I can’t recommend this enough; it’s pure magic. After sunset, a boat takes you to a special spot where they shine bright lights into the water. This attracts plankton, which in turn attracts the gentle giant manta rays. You’ll float on the surface holding onto a lighted board while these incredible creatures, with wingspans up to 15 feet, glide and swoop right below you. It’s a passive, safe, and absolutely mesmerizing experience. Your kid must be at least 5 years old and you must book this in advance! This is the Manta Ray night snorkel tour that we booked!
Day 7: Aloha ʻOe (Farewell) & Last Treasures
On your last day, let’s soak up every last drop of Aloha. Depending on your flight time, you can do some last-minute souvenir shopping on Aliʻi Drive, take one final dip in the pool, or just relax on the lanai. The goal is to end your trip feeling refreshed, not rushed, with a suitcase full of memories (and maybe some Kona coffee).
Mahalo and Safe Travels
There you have it—a week in Kona designed for comfort, connection, and a whole lot of fun. This itinerary is just a starting point, a collection of my favorite experiences that I hope will make your family vacation as magical and stress-free as possible. The real beauty of Kona is in the small moments: watching your child see a sea turtle for the first time, sharing a laugh over a colorful shave ice, and feeling the warm sand between your toes as the sun sets. I hope you leave with your hearts full and your spirits refreshed, already dreaming of your next trip back.
